ABOUT

Communities for Climate Compensation is a growing movement of communities who want to see big coal and gas export corporations pay their fair share for the cost of climate damage.

No matter your background or postcode, most of us believe in a fair go – that if you make a mess, you should clean it up. But right now our communities are cleaning up a mess we didn’t create.

Councils, residents and local businesses are already paying the price of climate change with soaring insurance premiums, damaged infrastructure, and disaster clean-up costs, while big coal and gas corporations are making billions, paying very little tax, and pocketing massive government subsidies.

That's why we're calling for a Climate Compensation Fund, paid for by a Climate Pollution Levy on big coal, oil and gas export corporations, so our communities – from the suburbs, to the bush, to the Torres Strait – have what they need to keep safe and thrive.

THE PLAN - LOCAL COUNCIL MOTIONS

Tipping Point is supporting teams in towns and suburbs across the continent to launch their own local campaigns. The first step is winning successful Polluter Pays council motions in support of a Climate Compensation Fund.

Why local councils? Because they are on the frontlines of growing climate change costs; they are the most accessible layer of government; and they can powerfully advocate to state and federal governments. Councils are responsible for critical local services and infrastructure, and they are already facing rapidly rising disaster clean-up and insurance costs with limited options to raise more revenue. Without a Climate Compensation Fund, it will be ratepayers and taxpayers who foot the bill.

Here's how it works:

🗳️ Local teams start with community surveys asking who should pay for the rising costs of climate change that people are already facing – big polluters, or residents and local businesses

📊 Once communities reach their survey goal, they can declare majority community support for polluters to pay, not residents or local businesses

🏛️ With growing community backing, local teams work with local councillors to pass Polluter Pays motions calling for a Climate Compensation Fund paid for by a Climate Pollution Levy on coal and gas exports

🚀 As more and more councils pass motions, they become a powerful collective voice for advocacy to the Federal Government, building pressure to establish the Climate Compensation Fund, and creating a drumbeat of national media stories calling for polluters to pay.
