Are you a supportive local councillor?
Supportive councillors are invited to join a national briefing on the City of Sydney’s motion to the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) General Assembly.
The ALGA motion calls on the Federal Government to secure significantly increased, ongoing funding for local governments to respond to escalating climate impacts—and to establish a fair funding mechanism to deliver it. This includes implementing a climate pollution levy on coal, oil and gas corporations, with revenue directed into a dedicated Climate Compensation Fund for local governments and communities. The intent is to shift the growing financial burden of climate damage away from councils and ratepayers, and onto the industries most responsible, as costs from disasters, infrastructure damage and service delivery continue to rise
The briefing will also include an overview of the growing Communities for Climate Compensation network and the community campaigns supporting councils to advance polluter pays approaches locally and nationally.
This briefing will provide:
- A clear overview of the City of Sydney motion and ALGA process
- The strategic opportunity to build cross-council support ahead of the General Assembly
- Practical ways councillors can support, including attending ALGA, advocating within councils, and contributing local case studies
- An introduction to the Communities for Climate Compensation network, including the community campaigns underway to support councils to pass polluter pays motions and build momentum locally
Who should attend?
Supportive councillors committed to securing fair, sustainable climate funding for local government, including advancing a polluter pays approach that ensures coal, oil and gas corporations contribute to the rising costs councils are facing.
